Father John J. McVean, O.F.M., was born near Rochester, NY. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy from St. Bonaventure University, a Bachelor’s Degree in Theology and a Master’s Degree in Sociology from The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. He joined the Franciscan Order in 1960, took simple vows in 1962 and final vows in 1965.

Father John studied for the priesthood at Holy Name College in Washington, DC and was ordained in 1967. As Co-Director of St. Francis Friends of the Poor, he, together with Father John Felice and Father Tom Walters established the St. Francis Residences in New York City for the chronically mentally ill homeless. He currently sits on the Board of Directors for St Francis Friends of the Poor, Inc.
