We transform the lives of the most vulnerable of the homeless population, those with serious mental illness that challenges their ability to stay healthy and housed.

Take a walk down memory lane this November, to join our founders on their historic journey in funding, developing and championing our three residences.

"Start by doing what is necessary, then what is possible and suddenly you are doing the impossible." - St. Francis of Assisi

Founded in the 1970s by three Franciscan Friars seeking a solution to New York City’s homeless crisis, we pioneered the concept of permanent supportive housing for the homeless with mental illness when we opened the first of our three residences in Chelsea, Manhattan in 1980.

Today, we provide affordable, permanent housing coupled with on-site medical, psychiatric, wellness, and social services designed to help our nearly 300 residents thrive.

We are a haven for people who have had a lifetime of struggle and isolation.

A place to feel safe, accepted, and taken care of, to regain their health, to develop and re-establish relationships, and to live in community. Much more than a roof over your head, the St. Francis Residences are a real home. We exercise, cook, dine, create, go to the movies, socialize, and take trips together.

From the 1970’s supportive housing movement to today…

Our residents are living longer and healthier lives than many individuals with chronic mental illness, who often “live” on the streets or in shelters, jails, or hospitals.

We are a community, living together to help one another. Become a part of the St. Francis Friends family!

Make a Gift. Transform a Life.

A gift of any size makes a lasting and meaningful impact!
